2016 Rio Olympics
To kick off the final week of the Olympics, our residents had a go at a fun game of "Balloon Tennis". A makeshift "tennis racket", fashioned from a plastic plate and a wooden handle, is used to hit the balloon from one end of the table to the other.
Shirley Roberts and Elaine Bell at their starting positions, ready to go!
John Schinckel watches Rosie take the next shot, managing to hit the balloon straight across the table.
Dorothy Walter with a perfect pass across the table to Keith Bates.
Awarding the winners with their medals, Lifestyle staff member Pam Millard congratulates John Schinckel for his efforts winning the Bronze medal. An excited Shirley Roberts was awarded the Silver medal for her great shots, and Keith Bates took home the Gold for this round.
Our Residents had an entertaining lunch today, four of our staff participated in a short, but very entertaining walking race from the Hinze Dining Room all the way up to the Chapman Dining Room, and back again.
There was only one rule for this Olympic event ... no running!
The first heat was a lot of fun, with cheers from the residents in the dining room encouraging the contestants. Coming up to "Mount Chapman" the pace slowed a bit with the uphill slope, but it was no match for Andrew, who came out on top for the Gold medal. Next came Tina winning the Silver medal, and Raelene and Nicole neck and neck through the door to share the Bronze medal.
A quick breather, a few photos of the walkers, and some much needed encouragement from the Residents and they were back at it again for the final heat.
A bit of a quicker pace power walking down the hill, the competition turned around with Nicole and Raelene taking first place, Andrew coming in close second, and Tina all smiles in third place.
Of course the Residents have been getting involved in games of their own too!
Weightlifting during iGym with the Physio staff,
and Olympic themed Word Games.
There's still another week of the games to go, and we can't wait to get involved in the rest of activities our wonderful Lifestyle staff have planned.
To celebrate the 2016 Rio Olympics, staff at Longridge took part in an opening ceremony of our own.
New Car Park for Independent Living Resdients!
Works began on the 28th of July, builder Jo Bunnik and his crew started to clear and prepare the area to be sealed. Maintenence team member, Andrew Borg, has been hard at work relocating the irrigation system before the gravel arrives to be compacted into the area. We hope to have the hot mix ready to go by the 15th of July.
Next step, the hot mix.
It's not quite time for the hotmix, the builders have to cement a border around the area first before the hot mix can be laid.

The Maintenance team and our Volunteer Gardener, Carol Richens, have been hard at work revamping the hill by the staff car park on Pavy Drive.
Whilst the plants are still only small and fresh into the ground, it is still nice to see this area with a fresh new look.
